The name endometriosis comes from the word endometrium, which is the tissue that lines the inside of the uterus. This tissue that looks and acts like endometrial tissue is found out side of the uterus is called Endometriosis. Usually occurs inside abdominal cavity, on ovaries, bowels, rectum or on tissue linings.

Endometriosis, probably starts when a women begins having periods, how ever it usually is not diagnosed until ages 25 to 35, most common in nalliparous women.

CAUSES:-

1. The exact cause is un known, but it is thought that some cells from the womb [uterus] ,lining get outside the uterus into the pelvic area ,they get there by spilling backwards along the fallopian tubes ,when they get a period.
2. Or one more idea is that when you get your period ,the cells may travel backwards throgh the fallopian tubes into the pelvis, over there the cells attach and grow.
3. Some times it may runs in families ,have mother or sister with endometriosis.
4. Started the periods at young age. And have frequent periods or they last for 7 or more days .
5. High estrogen levels.

SYMPTOMS:-

1. Abdominal cramps or back pain during menstruation with heavy bleeding. Or pain before periods.
2. Painful inter course [dyspareunia]
3. Difficulty becoming pregnant , [due to obstruction of the tubes or scar tisue at ovaries, adhessions at fallopian tubes]
4. Spotting or bleeding per rectum or per vagina in b/w periods.
5. Painful urination especially during menstruation. 

DIAGNOSIS:-

Investigations to diagnose endometriosis are only done if symptoms become troublesome like, infertility or dyspareunia and menstrual complaints become persistent.
