Cold weather leads to Sinus Headache Sinus Disease

Sinus disease is the infection of sinuses located in the bones around the nose, cheeks and forehead. These sinuses are the air filled cavities which are connected to the nose through a small and narrow channels. When these sinuses get infected with cold, virus or bacteria, these sinuses swell and the narrow channels or the airways gets blocked. Due to infection excess mucus is formed in the sinuses and this thick mucus increases pressure and leads to headache, facial pain, fever, dizziness, ear pain and so on. Sinus disease is classified into different types based on the severity and duration of infection. The different types of sinusitis are acute sinusitis, sub acute sinusitis, chronic sinusitis and recurrent sinusitis. Acute sinusitis is a condition where the pain and infections lasts for 2-4 weeks. Sub acute Sinusitis is a condition where the infection and swelling lasts for 4-12 weeks. Chronic sinusitis is a condition where people face inflammation and infection for more than 12 weeks whereas recurrent sinusitis is a condition where people face infection several times a year. People with sinus disease face symptoms like blocked nose, fatigue, fever, headache, loss of ability to smell, cough, bad breath, facial pain and so on. Sinus disease is caused due to several factors like allergies, cold, nasal polyps, weak immunity, deviated septum and also due to weather or seasonal changes.

How Weather effects on Sinus

The symptoms of sinusitis gets triggered seasonal changes. In cold weather the quality of air, cold breeze and cold temperatures leads to illnesses like cold, flu which further leads to sinus infection by irritating the airways. In cold weather most of stay indoors which increase our risk of exposure to allergens like dust mites, pollen, pet dander and so on. This exposure to allergens also leads to sinusitis by irritating our airways. The extreme cold weathers and dry air causes the mucus become thicker which further causes pain and discomfort. In cold weathers due to low immunity, we are at an increased risk of several viral and bacterial infections. Especially children and elders face severe symptoms of sinusitis in cold weathers. In winter the air is dry and this dry air makes our sinuses dry and triggers the sinus problems.
