The thyroid gland produces thyroid hormone which regulates many metabolic processes in the body. The thyroid gland is situated in the front of the neck. Types of thyroid disorders:
Hyperthyroidism:
Hyperthyroidism is caused by excess circulating thyroid hormone. Excess or too much of these thyroid hormones would cause the body to have hyper metabolism. The main cause of hyperthyroidism is grave's disease. Grave's disease is an autoimmune system. The patients with hyperthyroidism seems to have heat intolerance, tachycardia. Hypothyroidism:
Hypothyroidism is the malfunction of the thyroid gland. In hypothyroidism the thyroid gland fails to secrete enough of the hormones. The conditions that lead to hypothyroidism are Hashimoto's thyroiditis, cretinism, sub-acute thyroiditis and riedel's thyroiditis.

It refers to the hyper functioning follicular adenoma in normal thyroid. Mostly common in the age of 30s to 40s and present with similar symptoms as like hyperthyroidism.
Sub-Acute Thyroiditis:
Inflammation of the thyroid that causes the gland to leak excess hormones, resulting in temporary hyperthyroidism that generally lasts a few weeks but may persist for months.
Hashimoto's Thyroiditis:
It is the most common cause of hypothyroidism. It's an autoimmune disorder which can happen due to anti microsomal and anti thyroid globulin antibodies. It may be hyperthyroid early in its course.
Thyroid hormones and pituitary gland:
The hypothalamus regulates most of the bodies endocrine system. Some neurons within the hypothalamus produce and secrete thyrotrophin releasing hormones also called TRH. TRH is secreted into the hypothalamal hypophysio portal vessels and carried into the anterior lobe of pituitary gland where it stimulates cells to make thyroid stimulating hormone TSH. TRH stimulates the release of TSH from the anterior lobe of the pituitary. TSH enters the blood stream and is carried to the thyroid gland. At the thyroid gland TSH stimulates the production and release of thyroxine, a hormone that regulates the metabolic rate of all the cells in the body. In addition to regulating the metabolic rate, thyroxine inhibits the TRH containing neurons within the hypothalamus. This inhibition results in decrease release of TRH and thus a decrease in secretion of TSH and thyroxine.
